JUILLIARD STRING QUARTET

THE EARLY YEARS

LIVE CONCERTS AT THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS

DOREMI is proud to present the founding and early members of the renowned Juilliard String Quartet: Robert Mann, Robert Koff, Raphael Hillyer, Arthur Winograd, Isidore Cohen, Earl Carlyss, and Claus Adam - in releasing for the first time ever the Quartet's memorable performances at the Library of Congress. These concerts, played on the Library's incomparable Stradivarius instruments, represent musical events of historical and artistic significance. These distinguished members of the Juilliard String Quartet are giving their enthusiastic endorsement to DOREMI for embarking on this exciting venture, and together we look forward to sharing these performances with music lovers everywhere.
The concerts, which were broadcast nation-wide and taped, include compositions by the great classical and contemporary masters, with the participation of distinguished guest artists. The performances to be released by DOREMI will be drawn directly from the Library of Congress' archived master tapes.

The genesis of the historic concerts to be released by DOREMI is to be found in the generous philanthropy of two remarkable patrons of music, Mrs. Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge and Mrs. Gertrude Clarke Whittall. In 1924 Mrs. Coolidge presented funding to the Library of Congress for the construction of an auditorium bearing her name and at the same time established a foundation dedicated to music, including the acquisition of manuscripts, the commissioning of works and the organizing of festivals. Subsequently, twelve years later, in 1936, Mrs. Whittall donated five rare Stradivarius instruments and Tourte bows to the Library of Congress, chosen for her by the violinist Louis Krasner (b. 1903) for whom Alban Berg and Arnold Schoenberg wrote their violin concertos. Her one stipulation was that the instruments were only to be used by string quartets performing at the Library. To this end, she further made an endowment to support an ensemble in residence. In the first years, guest quartets played on these instruments, including the Coolidge String Quartet, but eventually the Library decided to set up a permanent string quartet in residence. From 1940 to 1962, the Budapest String Quartet fulfilled this role, and from 1962 it has been the Juilliard String Quartet.
